Lady Liberty

What's your first stop in NYC? Mine is always one of the major landmarks.
No matter how many times I've visited or how many months I lived there, I
still love paying a visit to the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Times
Square, Battery Park, the World Trade Center and the like. They're classics that I never
tire of seeing. These two headed straight downtown to the waterfront for a better view
of Lady Liberty. They're also sporting the biggest trends for fall: sneakers, bomber
jackets, small structured bags, etc. (more on that next week).

Hint hint: this is your first sneak peak of the 2017 planner. These two are (for
obvious reasons) our September girls! The planner launches next week, so stay
tuned!

Trend: Puffer

As we head into the weekend (and as it's still hot outside), the thought of wearing a down jacket right now is frightening. Here's the deal though.... companies and designers are already shipping fall/winter. If you want the good stuff, you better buy it now.

One of the more practical trends this year is a puffer coat. They're the warmest outwear made and now designers have put a fashionable spin on them.

Trend: Blanket Capes

The bigger, bulkier, and more overbearing the better. Blanket-like capes were shown left and right on the Fall runways. The stand-out was definitely the Burberry wrap Cara Delevingne wore that has since been seen on Olivia Palermo

I'm also quite obsessed with this Chloe Pre-Fall look.

Trend: Draped Trench

Putting a new spin on an old classic, grab a trench coat (start by looking in your grandfather's closet). Wear it open with distressed denim (either shorts or jeans) and you've got a look that's fresh and fashionable.

This is a trickle-up trend that was inspired by the street-stylers. Who What Wear also did a feature yesterday on Unexpectedly Cool Ways to Wear a Trench Coat

Trend: Vests

Invest in a vest and make it a structured one. Wear it on warmer days opened with a sleeveless top under it. Wear it later layered over a sweater with a skirt.

Trend: wide-leg trousers

We can all stop holding our breath while we attempt to zip our pants. Skinny pants are out. Wide leg trousers are in!

Trend: white on white

Yes, you CAN wear white after Labor Day. Yes, you CAN wear white jeans after Labor Day. It's simple.

Execute the look with the following pairings (click on the link for an inspirational photo):

Keep in mind that it's all in the fabrication. While I think you can wear white after Labor Day, maybe not white linen.

Culottes

One of my favorite runways for Spring 2015 was Tibi (if you follow me on instagram, you already got a sneak peak of this illustration). It's effortless and wearable with a touch of avant-garde in the Pharrell-sized hats. It also is a continuation of one of the biggest trends for Fall, culottes. Go ahead and invest in a pair - they're not going anywhere anytime soon.

Tip for wearing culottes: go up a size. You don't want these to be tight. The looser, the more flattering.

Alos, check out my [ fall trends ] '14 Pinterest board for more inspiration on how to wear the look.

Trend: Checked Out

One of the easiest patterns to wear in the fall is plaid. Lucky for you, this classic pattern is also a major trend this season. Throw on a plaid shirt and distressed denim and you're on point. Make it more streamlined with a check blazer or dress. Still not sure about the trend? Ease into it with a check handbag or other accessory.

I instantly fell in love with this ladylike dress Christina of The Quarter Life Closet wore to a fashion week party in New York.

Trend: Denim on Denim

We've been discussing the "60s meets 90s" for fall. Today, we're switching gears to the '90s...

This trend, along with most of fashion (in my opinion), is just as much inspired by what's happening on the sidewalk as what's on the catwalk. Street style has become a huge movement in fashion and it's not slowing down anytime soon.

Denim on denim is a tough look to pull off, but when Olivia Palermo does it, we should all take note. She's the picture of ladylike femininity and pulls off this edgier look effortlessly (see this illustration come to life in my video from instagram).
Be sure to check out my [ fall trends ] Pinterest board for inspiration on how to wear this trend and all the other big trends for this season.

Trend: 60s

Yesterday, we discussed the "'60s meets '90s" feel for Fall. Today, we're focusing on the '60s...

With A-line silhouettes, bold prints and go-go boots for all, heavy hitters like Valentino, Gucci, Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton were all taking it back to the hippie era. Invest in an A-line dress or skirt that you can wear with flats or boots, something you can wear to the office or out on the town.

Trend: Mod Minis

I don't know about you, but some of the trends for Fall are reminding me of my middle school days. First it was Birkenstocks. Now, it's mini skirts and knee highs... it's all hitting close to home. Whether it started in the 60s and reemerged in the 90s, it feels 90s to me.

On the heels of yesterday's post, style a mini with a similar oversized cable knit for an ultra chic look. Bonus points if you pair it with knee high boots or flat pointed oxfords (more on shoes later).

Trend: Skirts & Sweaters

If you follow me on instagram, you already saw a sneak peak of this illustration in these three videos (one, two, three). It's one of the most fab bloggers, Aimee Song of Song of Style, from the streets of New York (as seen on @portermagazine). She's wearing one of key looks for fall, an oversized sweater with a skirt. Sounds simple, right? Bloggers, celebrities and street stylers are wearing this look with every shape skirt imaginable. I prefer it with something more fitted like Aimee's BCBG fluted hem skirt.

Trend: Wrap Skirts

A major style that was shown in nearly every fall collection is the wrap skirt. Shown in all lengths (maxi, midi and mini) it's a piece to purchase now. Pair it with a lightweight blouse while it's still hot outside; trade the blouse for an oversized sweater when it gets colder.

In my humble opinion, it's the ultimate choice in terms of being flattering. The asymmetry of the hemline doesn't cut you off like a straight hem.

Good news, as the Spring 2015 collections are currently being shown at NYFW, this style is still relevant. It's a trend that has staying power as designers are reintroducing it for next season.

Trend: Blush

Let't talk fall fashion. While the Spring 2015 shows are underway, let's start with the here and now, fall. What should you be buying to wear in the coming months? What colors are big? What is the new handbag style? We'll be covering all of this and much much more in The September Issue right here.

....

She's off to NYFW! Her train just arrived at Grand Central Station and she's photo ready for the street style photographers. She's wearing one of the big color trends for fall, BLUSH. Wear it now with a nude shoe; wear it later with a jacket draped over your shoulders.

File this one under buy now/wear now. And be sure to follow my Pinterest board [ fall trends ] '14 for expanded coverage and daily picks on the latest trends.

The September Issue: Final Walk

There was one collection that made me short of breath, and that was the Marc by Marc Jacobs collection. The cool 70s vibe, the afros, the structured bags.... oh my. It was all around my favorite collection, but this look in particular was probably my favorite look from all the shows.

The September Issue: Color Crush Oxblood

You knew it was coming eventually as I have already posted about it here and here.  I have always been a hater of maroon, but oxblood is a different story. The name change is significant.

She's wearing the most fab shoes and my new favorite bag, the Madewell Sloane Mini-Satchel

The September Issue: Color Crush

As seen on the runway of Marc Jacobs (above) mustard and ink make a lovely combination.

More ideas of how to incorporate one or both of these colors into your fall wardrobe are available on my September Issue board on Pinterest

Something happened with this chica..... her legs look weird, and the colors didn't translate well. So, she's not available as a print. Better luck (to me) next time.
